Re-Start

Entrepreneurship has proven to be a promising avenue for refugees and migrants to integrate into local economies. However, they face significant obstacles that hinder their success in business ventures. Supporting entrepreneurship among migrants and refugees is crucial in promoting their inclusion and economic empowerment.

Statistics show that newcomers are more likely to start new businesses compared to native populations in most OECD countries. However, the survival rate of their companies tends to be lower. This can be attributed to various challenges they encounter, including their legal status, language barriers, limited entrepreneurial skills, and unfamiliarity with the local business environment. Access to finance also remains a significant hurdle for many refugee and migrant entrepreneurs.

To address these barriers and provide support, the Re-Start project will conduct comprehensive research in each partner organization's respective countries. The findings of this research will be compiled into an online guidebook and database, available in PDF and web format. This resource will serve as a comprehensive reference for refugees and migrants interested in starting a new business. It will cover essential information ranging from residency requirements and necessary agencies to funding options, taxation, and sector-specific legislation in each partner country.

Recognizing the linguistic diversity among newcomers, the guidebook and database will be made accessible in multiple languages. In addition to English, it will be available in the host country languages, including Spanish, Finnish, Portuguese, and French. This ensures that language barriers do not prevent aspiring entrepreneurs from accessing vital information and resources.

By providing comprehensive guidance and facilitating access to relevant information, Re-Start aims to empower refugee and migrant entrepreneurs to navigate the complexities of starting and running a business in their host countries. Through entrepreneurship, they can secure regular incomes, create positive social impacts within their communities, and contribute to the local economy.
